Saris Solo

Easy to mount and a cinch to store in the back of your car, Saris’ Solo is a low-profile rack for peace-of-mind convenience. Solo’s uni-body frame has no adjustable parts, which makes it a no-brainer to set up. With its soft, rubber, pivoting feet and four hold-down straps, the Solo safely and securely attaches to your car. Two strong buckles and an integrated anti-sway strap keep your bike in place. As an added bonus, the Solo is built with 100% recyclable, non-rusting materials.

Great but the instructions are missing a key thing

          Comments:

At first I was ready to chuck this rack in the trash because on longer trips my bike started slowly slipping lower and lower. I nearly had a panic attack imaging my bike scattered all over the freeway. Even though my bike is well under 35lbs, the metal buckles weren't holding the straps tightly enough to keep them from slipping. But I called Saris support and they gave me great advice: Tie a knot in the two upper straps directly below the buckle and they won't slip. The knot is too fat to pass through the buckle so it'll keep everything in place. Apparently this advice is in the manual for other Solo racks, but not this one. Maybe they wanted to keep the little instruction card dead simple, but this tidbit made all the difference for me. Now I love the rack and feel totally confident using it.

I drive a 1999 Saturn SL1. The SOLO bike carrier works great. It has quick release straps which make it easy to take on and off and tighten down snuggly. Also, mounting the bike and securing it are easy with the plastic straps. Overall, I find it easy to put my bike on and take off. For small cars, you will need to remove the front wheel. Orientation of the bike carrier is such that you have to mount the bicycle with the front wheel on the passenger side (right side of car). The exhaust system is on the right side of the car, so I remove the front wheel to make sure the exhaust does not melt my tire. Also, the pedals will contact the car. I orientate the pedals so that they contact the license plate.

                                  1. Belt clamps at point of attachment to car will scratch paint over time: I lined them with a 1" stick on weather stripping to solve. 2. Same with material used on rack itself...too harsh on paint 3. Need to tie down rear wheel also and be sure to cover the pedal: if you don't tie it down as you do the front wheel, it will spin and the peddal will scratch the trunk

I use this product on my 2007 Honda Civic coupe and it fits to the back of the car with no problem. The install is extremely simple and the rack was able to handle the weight of my road bike (18lbs). I drove at highway speeds of 110KM/H and both my bike and the rack were stable. I would recommend using masking tape where the hooks attach to the car and where the rubber feet rest on the body. I also recommend using a microfiber cloth on the top tube of your bike to avoid scratches and to use a tie down strap to keep the bike wheels from spinning and handlebars from turning. I was able to use the straps from the two bottom hooks to help keep the bike from swaying into the bumper. Overall this is a great rack for someone going from Point A to Point B and does not plan on leaving their bike/car un-attended for a period of time.

For the price it's not that bad. The contact points are hard rubber on the frame and metal on the mounts. You should buy some sort of felt pads so that it doesn't scratch your paint. I didn't do that the 1st time and it scratched my paint. On smaller cars (like my GTI) the wheels sit out enough that the wind carries it away from the car. Lot of tie downs are recommended. Bottom line, it works but take the time to secure it well.

I have a small two seater car, Toyota MR2 1991 T-top, so roof rack more out of the question. Plus I only need it for one bike. I was looking into the Bone 2 but the store I went to didn't have it. I asked about the Solo, which was not out on their floor, but he said they have them and brought one out. I wasn't thinking about getting it because of the design and build of it. But I think simple is good. I went ahead and bought it hoping it would do the job. Making this long story shorter... it worked like a charm! Though that was just putting it on and testing the bike, not actually on the road. So I hope it sticks!
