Saris Sentinel 3-Bike

Saris’ Sentinel 3-Bike rack is ready to go right out of the box, easy to mount, and, thanks to its narrow arm spread, securely holds three bikes. The frame adjusts to the contours of your car and folds down flat for simple storage. To protect your car and provide a solid mount, the six hold-down straps have coated hooks, while the legs are foam-padded. Stiff ratcheting straps ensure a firm grasp on your bikes.

          Comments:

I bought this for my 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon for a cross country trip through the desert and to the west coast. I was initially skeptical about it's compatibility with the wagon's rear hatch door, but the site and a local sales rep ensured its compatibility if used with the hatch huggers (so make sure you get those huggers!). I was glad to be forced to use them because it make the rack feel much more secure on the hatch door, as the top straps are laced through the inside of the upper edge of the door (near the hinges) and then re-strapped to the rack's buckles, as opposed to relying solely on exterior clips. I chose to buy the 3-bike rack even though I was only transporting 2 bikes because the 3-bike design has 2 extra side straps which stabilizes the rack crosswise. I didn't realize how important this was for me until I was driving at night towards the bay area when extremely high winds whipped my entire car with rack and bikes strapped down from side to side like a ping pong game between the lane dividers. My left side strap came loose because of this after about 10 minutes of driving in these winds. I pulled off into a gas station and checked the lines and realized that the left side strap had not been tied down, and the high winds caused vibration on the strap enough to loosen the buckle. Which leads me to my next point... TIE THE LOOSE STRAPS TIGHT AND CLOSE TO THE BUCKLES AFTER FULLY LOADING THE RACK AND TIGHTENING THE STRAPS. This is a critical step in making sure the rack stays secure and tight on your trip. I believe that loose straps flapping in the wind without a knot tied close to the buckle causes vibration along the strap, thus causing the strap to go loose. This should be highlighted in the instructions as it is an easy detail to overlook. After I tightened all the lines, tied a secure knot at all 6 buckles, and tied down the loose ends to the rack, it was smooth secure sailing through the wind tunnel to my destination. With respect to placement of the rack on my hatch door, I rested the lower pad on the lower edge of my rear window, right after the glass ends and the curve of the metal frame begins (in other words, right below the windshield wiper). The upper pads rested on the glass. I did this because I was driving through Nevada and had experience with state troopers having issues with drivers when bikes and/or bike racks obscure license plates (even partially covered is problematic and cause for them to pull you over and issue a ticket). So I played it safe and mounted the rack high to avoid any problems. The placement worked best with the rack pinned at very last the hole, closest to the pads. This configuration also allowed the rack to sit slightly angled up (above 90 degrees) as recommended by the instructional video. I could have placed the rack lower, where the lower pad rested just below the license plate, and the upper pads just below the windshield wiper, but that would have partially covered the plate. If you're in a state where you know that isn't a problem, this would be a good placement for the rack as well. This lowered position also makes it easier to load up the bikes. For a short person like me, that would have been preferable, but I chose to deal with the cumbersomeness of a higher mounted rack rather than a ticket. ;) Overall, the rack is built well and easy to assemble and mount. It is secure as long as you follow the instructions and tie the lines at the buckle and also secure the loose ends so they don't flap in the wind. I can live with these extra security measures for the lower price point. I would highly recommend driving the car you wish to mount the rack onto to your nearest dealer or retailer and visually test the placement of the rack on your trunk or hatch door with the sales rep to confirm you are comfortable with placement and installation process before purchasing, so you know exactly what you bought onto (Caveat emptor - Let the buyer beware!).

Generally very happy with this purchase. Well-made rack, easy to fit and adjust (on my Ford B-Max) that carries three adult bikes with ease. Slight hassle loading a ladies-frame bike with thick tubes, but managed it in the end (the problem is the bike frame, not the rack). The upper webbing straps look a bit thin, as they carry all of the weight, but I had no problems, so I guess they are OK. Only quibble is that the one I saw in the (online) store had (cool!) yellow joints, but the one I received had (boring!) black ones.

This rack has been a reasonable rack for a reasonable price. I was looking for a rack with 6 point hold down, which this rack has. It has functioned as I thought. However, though I never have used the middle hold down, I noticed that it was cracked right down the center. I have contacted Saris service for a replacement, so hopefully that will go well.

Marketing hype would have us believe you must spend $150 plus for a bike carrier. This carrier has proven stable, easy to set up on my 2008 Toyota Matrix wagon which has a hatch-back style rear door. I've used the rack carrying my bikes on camping trips traveling over some fairly poor roads and am pleased with the results. Having seen poor ratings from others, I conclude that (1) they did not properyly install the rack, (2) they may not have properly loaded the bikes on the rack and (3) may be loading inexpensive and very heavy "toy" bikes. I have had no negative issues and am completely satisfied.

I like loading up my bikes and going places and having to put them in the car cut down options. I went to the Saris site and was pointed to one that would work for me. I'm on the road!
