I have been endlessly searching for a top-quality guaranteed waterproof and windproof pair of gloves with good insulation, that would not be too bulky. I am not a cyclist but rather a jogger. I jog outside in all weather conditions, and as I live in a mountainous region - the rain comes with strong winds which can truly freeze your fingers. Winds, just as in cycling, can significantly lower the temperature, which is crucial for the outdoor sportsman who stays outside for 1-2 hours a day. Wind with rain is probably the worst combination to ensure your fingers' discomfort and destroy the joy in the outdoor sport. Therefore, I was willing to spend any sum for the product, as long as the weather proofing worked, and I would arrive home with a pair of warm and dry (not sweaty) hands. I searched specifically for the words "waterproof" and "windproof" written by the manufacturer and even consulted with a number of service specialists in a variety of sporting goods stores. i even looked for those reviews written by customers of "dunking the gloved hand into a bowl of water to check whether their hands stayed dry". As I had read a few good reviews on Pearl Izumi, I decided to purchase their winter gloves. 2 days following the purchase of these Pearl Softshell PRO gloves, it was raining cats and dogs. When I put the glove on AT HOME, it felt like a wonderful down blanket, with a perfect fit. I even liked the look and moderate bulkiness. However, as soon as I walked into the wind and rain, I began feeling the wind and cold right through the stitching of the silicone pads on the first-second-third fingers, on both hands. A few minutes later - I had to begin breathing hot air onto my fingertips as they were freezing up. Then to my surprise my brand-new ultra-expensive "guaranteed waterproof" gloves were wet inside. My fingers felt as though I was wearing a $2 pair of porous acrylic gloves off a street-stand. All 5 fingers were wet. NOT damp. truly WET! My hands were so frozen I could not move my fingers. (And I would like to state that I do not normally suffer of cold fingertips in the winter.) When I returned home, I gave them to a friend of mine to try on, and she too was surprised to find that all the finertips were completely wet on the inside - so I wasn't just imagining it. It seems that though the cuffs may be made well, keeping the cold out and away from the wrist, the stitching of the fingertips and of the silicone pads demonstrates poor workmanship and decreases the functionality of the glove, leaving the glove useless unless one lives in a zone where winter means that the temperature drops but the cold is stagnant and no wind or rain coming around. Needless to say, this pair of gloves is going right back to the store for a refund. Unfortunately, after hours of searching online in numerous websites, it seems as though companies that are well known and stand behind the quality of their tops and bottoms, have succeeded in disappointing many cyclists who cannot find a glove with a combination of sufficient waterproofing, windproofing and insulation that doesn't look and feel like a hibernating polar bear on their hands. I throw the challenge at all the manufacturers out there, with the promise that if you do come up with the perfect glove - I will be first on line to purchase!
