2013 Trek X-Caliber (Gary Fisher Collection)

Trek's X-Caliber rules the trails with its light, stiff Trek Gold aluminum frame with Gary Fisher G2 Geometry. It's quick and capable, and offers excellent climbing, descending and handling so you ride your favorite trails faster with the same effort. Leading the charge is a custom 100mm-travel RockShox Reba fork that soaks up the rough stuff. And, a SRAM/Shimano 3x10 drivetrain lets you steamroll over, across and down pretty much whatever Mother Nature puts in front of you. Plus, the X-Caliber boasts Bontrager's great tubeless-ready 29-inch wheels with meaty 2.2-inch tires, sure-stopping Avid discs and a host of legit Bontrager components

    Comments:

First 29er. Intermediate experience. Commute to work 3/5 days per week (60% dirt, 40% street) totaling 30 miles per week. Durable, light feel, fast, remote lockout is useful when constantly changing between street/dirt during my commute. Brakes are a little noisy, the rear especially, but this is a fairly simple fix. Overall fantastic bike. Cant beat Trek quality, air fork, and awesome gearing.

Basically its the only Trek mountain bike I have found that is specifically geared for climbing up steep terrain(22 front 36 back) with Trek Reba is a huge plus. X-Cal is basically the best climbing bike I have ever owned. I climb 60,000' a month and if your into that, I highly recommend this bike

I gave my son my 11' Wahoo and upgraded to the 13 X-Cal. When you purchase something you often wonder would it be worth it to spend more money to get what you want......The answer is YES. Aesthetically the bikes look very similar, but they are night and day when it comes to performace.

            Comments:

I have the 2012 X-cal frame with a custom build kit. Read into this what you will. My build kit consist of reba XX fork, X0 2x10 drive train, Stan's Crest Wheels, that pretty much covers the big stuff. I will review the frame in comparison to my superfy elite HT, to help interested consumers. I spend 90% of my cycling time on this bike, from rough single track to blazing fast fire roads to all out paved road suffering. The frame offers exactly the correct amount of stiffness and flex to let the bike be so versatile. The handling is spot on and the bike is consistent in the way it reacts to user input. If you are looking for a durable do all bike I feel this frame foots the bill. It seems to soak up alot of the vibration and buzz from gravel roads without being energy absorbing when climbing. My X-cal sees plenty of action and I always trust it for whatever I get myself into.

            Comments:

I bought the 2011 x-cal. I love the geometry of the bike and boy is it fast, especially hammering down fire roads. But the wheels and tyres really are naf. 3-cross lacing on big wheels is ridiculous and the tyres are more sketchy on dirt and gravel than the semi-slicks I run on my 26er. Not only that but they're painfully slow. Really the sucky tyres do a diservice to what should be a great bike for the price.
