2013 Trek Fuel EX 5

Step up your trail skills with Trek's Fuel EX 5. Featuring Trek's Full Floater and ABP suspension, this aluminum rig feels like it has way more than its 130mm of travel in the rough stuff. Yet when you're pedaling hard on smooth trails and uphill, it's wonderfully quick, efficient and lively. Complementing the trick frame is a RockShox fork and shock, a slick-shifting SRAM drivetrain, a host of durable Bontrager components and powerful Hayes disc brakes for maximum stopping power regardless of the conditions. Plus, the light Bonty wheels and tires tackle buffed-out singletrack, rock gardens and everything in between with style.

    Comments:

I've taken this bike thru sheer torture since purchased new at Victorville cycles on 9/17, and it still comes back for more. From 8 mile fire-road downhills, to technical single trail, this bike does it all. Still have yet to retune, since it's just that solid. I love it!

      Comments:

Ride urban trails, XC and single track and love bike as it is capable, fast and shifts smoothly. Stock tires are loud at speed on pavement and not very good in mud. Replace if planning to ride muddy trails and climb slippery slopes. I noticed a slight rear disk squeal first day and minor front disk rubbing under fast hard cornering on hard surfaces. Minor issues overall compared to upside of this bike. Ride bike 4/5 times per week 80-160 km.

      Comments:

I use this bike for 25 Kml per day, 3-4 days per week. I am doing a lot of climbing and descenting with it, and a lot of trails. It's bad to the bone, it's a monster! When i bought it, i also changed everything with Shimano XT (30 speed) components from my old bike, Shimano SLX brakes & Bontrager XR4 (2.35) tyres, so i can't realy comment about SRAM, Avid brakes & XR3 tyres.

      Comments:

put big earl 2.8 front and rear. no rubs on rear. occasional front rub on turn but worth the hassle in the Florida Sand. Able to ride 1/4 mile stretches of sugar sand between the woods trails and I'm 240# ! I LOVE this suspension. Bike lets you ride back on rear and keep the front tire skimming over the soft stuff like a scalding CR250. Mine is a 2009 5.5 EX FUEL - just got it old stock 2 weeks ago. When yours in NEW - flip it over at the bike shop, remove BOTH wheels, reinstall, and have the mechanic show you how to align the both calipers. It took me a lot of trial-error to figure it out. NEVER leave home riding without a tri-allen wrench. It's the only complaint I have and it's the case on nearly all hydraulic disc bikes. I'm new to them. super stopping power. Bike is very predictable on many types of terrain, including scrub palm root, sugar sand, clay, drops, sharp turns. I love this bike.

      Comments:

This is my first FS XC/Trail bike and I have taken my time in choosing the right one. I chose this one above all others in its price point and even some that are beyond it. I originally wanted to build a Santa Cruz Heckler or Butcher or a Banshee Spitfire but those options would be over my $2K initial budget. In the end it was a battle between the 2011 Trek Fuel EX5 and the 2011 Specialized Camber Comp @ identical prices and component specs. Trek won. Aaron Gwin's latest DH victory influenced me a subliminally, I guess. LOL I ride MTBs for fitness and fun. The great thing about the Fuel EX5 is the frame. It looks so burly for an XC bike. Soon I know I will change some parts to lighten the bike a bit, but I'm very happy with my purchase. With this bike, you get what you pay for. A fair deal for a nice platform for better things. I just wish all Fuel EXs had tapered steerer tubes... Happy Descents! JMG
