2014 Trek Allant 7

Potholes, taxis, trucks, busy paths, nothing stands in the way of Trek's Allant 7. It's ready to roll any time with its lightweight aluminum frame and fast 700c wheels with puncture-resistant tires. Let's say you don't live in the city, you just want to saunter around the neighborhood or cruise the bike path. No problem, the upright riding position and stable ride means transcendent comfort and excellent handling that makes it easy to navigate anywhere, town or country. Plus, the Shimano 7-speed drivetrain offers easy pedaling, while the powerful linear-pull brakes deliver excellent stopping power. You even get fenders so you can ride in comfort in all weather conditions.

    Comments:

I was very excited to purchase my first bicycle for leisure rides when I moved to Chicago. At this time, the Trek Allant was great for my needs. I didn't have to lift it up anywhere, and Chicago is a relatively flat place to cycle, so I didn't have much need for gears. Prior to purchasing this bike, I did not do much research or read many reviews. Now that I have moved to Portland, OR and use a bike as my main form of transportation (commuting 20 min. to work every day), I wish I had done my research. The Allant has proven to be VERY heavy, unreliable bike for commuting. I've had several issues with my gears not switching properly, issues with my breaks, things have fallen off - and it's only been a little over a year that I've owned it. Now that I am actually using it every day, it has proven to not be very durable. I purchased a new bike recently and am astounded by the difference it makes in my commute. I'd say I am in pretty good shape, but on the Allant I was always struggling up hills, even in a low gear, because of how heavy and cumbersome the bike is. The description says it's made for commuting, but I would not recommend it if you are commuting on anything other than completely flat roads. I also found out that very few bike racks are compatible with this bike - I tried ordering two different ones and neither fit. In addition, the cork handlebars that came with my model, while aesthetically pleasing, have started to crack on the ends. While it gave me some great leisurely rides on the Lakeshore Path in Chicago, I am disappointed in this bike as a means of every day commuting, and will be selling it very soon.
