I bought this bike from a local shop with a good reputation. I was told free tweaks and tuning for one year. I took it in twice because the shifter didn't work right. Gave up after the second time. They allegedly tuned it, but the brakes barely stop it. I love the practical touches: rack, fenders, tough tires, reflectors. I had to add lights, water bottle holder.

I'd looked around for an entry level sort of bike for the short commute to work (2-3 km each way) and the occasional ride to the shops (1-2 km each way). My routes are mainly flat, along roads or bike paths. With these purposes in mind I thought this bike would do and having now bought it, I'm totally satisfied. It rides easily, is stable, safe and feels comfortable. Mainly urban use (in small city) also requires basic aesthetics and this bike satisfies this requirement quite well. The only problem is when I want to go away and need to keep the bike in the apartment (instead of leaving it outside) it's quite heavy to lug up the stairs. But that is an occasional inconvenience. The daily safe and easy ride is good payoff.

I was very excited to purchase my first bicycle for leisure rides when I moved to Chicago. At this time, the Trek Allant was great for my needs. I didn't have to lift it up anywhere, and Chicago is a relatively flat place to cycle, so I didn't have much need for gears. Prior to purchasing this bike, I did not do much research or read many reviews. Now that I have moved to Portland, OR and use a bike as my main form of transportation (commuting 20 min. to work every day), I wish I had done my research. The Allant has proven to be VERY heavy, unreliable bike for commuting. I've had several issues with my gears not switching properly, issues with my breaks, things have fallen off - and it's only been a little over a year that I've owned it. Now that I am actually using it every day, it has proven to not be very durable. I purchased a new bike recently and am astounded by the difference it makes in my commute. I'd say I am in pretty good shape, but on the Allant I was always struggling up hills, even in a low gear, because of how heavy and cumbersome the bike is. The description says it's made for commuting, but I would not recommend it if you are commuting on anything other than completely flat roads. I also found out that very few bike racks are compatible with this bike - I tried ordering two different ones and neither fit. In addition, the cork handlebars that came with my model, while aesthetically pleasing, have started to crack on the ends. While it gave me some great leisurely rides on the Lakeshore Path in Chicago, I am disappointed in this bike as a means of every day commuting, and will be selling it very soon.
