2012 Trek X-Caliber (Gary Fisher Collection)

Trek's X-Caliber lets you rule the trails with its light, stiff, Trek Gold Series aluminum frame with Gary Fisher G2 Geometry that offers excellent climbing, descending and handling so you ride your favorite trails faster with the same effort. Leading the charge is a 100mm-travel RockShox custom Reba fork that soaks up the rough stuff. And, SRAM's 10-speed X7 drivetrain lets you steamroll over, across and down pretty much whatever Mother Nature puts in front of you. Plus, the X-Caliber boasts Bontrager's great 29-inch wheels with meaty 2.1-inch tires, sure-stopping Avid discs and a host of fine Bontrager components

Basically its the only Trek mountain bike I have found that is specifically geared for climbing up steep terrain(22 front 36 back) with Trek Reba is a huge plus. X-Cal is basically the best climbing bike I have ever owned. I climb 60,000' a month and if your into that, I highly recommend this bike

Ride hard and fast. Biker for 35 years, 1st 29er. Very happy with it. Gears, brakes, tires make this a very good 1st 29er choice. Looked and compared for a while before buying this 1. Very good choice, would recommend it to anyone.

            Comments:

I have the 2012 X-cal frame with a custom build kit. Read into this what you will. My build kit consist of reba XX fork, X0 2x10 drive train, Stan's Crest Wheels, that pretty much covers the big stuff. I will review the frame in comparison to my superfy elite HT, to help interested consumers. I spend 90% of my cycling time on this bike, from rough single track to blazing fast fire roads to all out paved road suffering. The frame offers exactly the correct amount of stiffness and flex to let the bike be so versatile. The handling is spot on and the bike is consistent in the way it reacts to user input. If you are looking for a durable do all bike I feel this frame foots the bill. It seems to soak up alot of the vibration and buzz from gravel roads without being energy absorbing when climbing. My X-cal sees plenty of action and I always trust it for whatever I get myself into.

            Comments:

I bought the 2011 x-cal. I love the geometry of the bike and boy is it fast, especially hammering down fire roads. But the wheels and tyres really are naf. 3-cross lacing on big wheels is ridiculous and the tyres are more sketchy on dirt and gravel than the semi-slicks I run on my 26er. Not only that but they're painfully slow. Really the sucky tyres do a diservice to what should be a great bike for the price.

This is my first 29er handles like a dream. It's light, fast, shifting very smooth, rolls almost over anything. Uphills no problem, did get two flats already thats what happens when your on the trails. Had this bike for 2 months already put 250 miles on it. Good Starter bike if you want to get into mountain bike riding.

I mainly use this bike for hard technical trails in western colorado and it has held up wonderfully except I broke the saddle on my third ride and burnt the brakes up on the fifth ride. That pads are getting to hot in the desert sun.
