2012 Trek Top Fuel 9.9 SSL

Trek's best-of-the-best Top Fuel 9.9 SSL tips the scales at just over 20 pounds. Yes, you read that right: a 20-pound, 100mm-travel, full-suspension race bike. Every inch of this beauty is optimized to make the scenery blur! The frame is Trek's OCLV Mountain Carbon and the suspension is handled by Fox with both ends featuring remote lockouts that'll let you spin the fast Bontrager Race XXX Lite wheels up to speed better than ever. For precision steering and maximum pedaling efficiency, the Top Fuel borrows the trick headset and bottom bracket press-in bearings from Trek's Tour de France-winning Madone. Trek then adds mountain-specific technology like their magnesium EVO link and ABP Race that keeps your rear wheel glued to the course at all times. Plus, with a full 20-speed Shimano XTR parts group, the best just keeps getting better. And faster.

    Comments:

I am a pro level xc female racer, and this bike, on the first use, handled SO well. It's fast, responsive, light, and overall a great bike. The only trouble I had was setting up the rear remote lockout (which is not a problem with the bike really, but rather the suspension). It was difficult to get the cable tight enough due to the design, but now that it is fixed, it locks out completely! Most XC full suspension bikes only lock out part of the way. Great job Trek! I now have a higher bar to set on any bikes that I purchase in the future!

I ride/trian an average of 2-3 hours a day in the front range of CO. This bike climbs so well and handles any descent with grace. (Now if only the rider could match that...) I can't say enough how much I recommend this bike.

        Comments:

I'm not a racer, but I ride hard at least 3 times a week. I ride the trails in San Diego County (La Costa, Calavera, Hodges, Elfin Forest, San Juan Trail, etc). They vary from mild to extremely technical with a full compliment of climbing and downhill experiences. I upgraded from an EX-8 and was instantly faster than ever before. Of course, you'll need to replace the laughable stock tires. I went with Hans Dampf Tubeless. The wheels are great - they are sealed up nice and tight from the factory. Just pop in a valve stem, pour in some sealant and inflate. No need to play around, trying to seal the tire. It was the easiest tubeless job ever. Even on my first ride, I was faster and able to make climbs that I never could before. The Top Fuel is built to climb ANYTHING fast. I was concerned about the 2x10 gears and the 100mm travel suspension. So far, I've been able to climb every hill I've tried with the 2x10 (30/42). I really like the remote lockout control on the handlebar! I don't miss fidgeting around for the switch on my old bike and losing all my momentum. I like longer rides (20+ miles), so I'll try and get lower gears up front (26/38) to do the longer climbs without killing my legs. The suspension is definitely built for speed. I lose no power from the crank - this thing lunges forward and bursts out of corners. I'm actually faster downhill because the bike inspires so much confidence. I did, however, go over the handlebars on a very technical downhill because the front forks bottomed out. If you're looking at this bike, you should already understand the tradeoff between plush suspension and all-around speed. The same can be said for the 2x10 drive train. It is built to be ridden very fast by a serious rider. The components are top-notch and very responsive. My only complaint is the proprietary crank pattern (88mm). In order to change the gearing, you have to replace the entire crank ($600). If you want a 3x10, you'll also have to replace the stock front derailleur. This bike will take you from the back of the pack to the front in a hurry, but only if you're experienced and conditioned. This is an outstanding bike. Any "complaints" are realistically just a matter of personalization. The Top Fuel 9.9 is unbeatable.

          Comments:

Let's see, how to keep this short and but get all the good bits in... Stuff that is new for 2012 - Kashima Coat - Does what it claims to do, for the most part. Initial impact feels about the same as last years fork/shock, but on continuously rough sections of trail, it is definitely smoother, like butter. Through Axle - Point your front wheel where you want to go and pedal. No more wandering on rough corners. Just go. Stuff that continues to rock - well pretty much everything else, but I will break it down. Shimano XTR - Smooth accurate shifting and true one finger braking. That is all you need to know. Oh, and it doesn't weigh much, kinda like a feather. Trek ABP suspension with BB90 and E2 - Each bit by itself is good. Put all three together and you get a platform that climbs like a scalded mountain goat and descends like a bat out of... it goes really fast, up or down and all around (really, all around, this thing corners like its on rails, with the proper tire) Stuff that I could take or leave - XR0 Tires - I was actually surprised how well they hooked up in the corners, but I prefer something with a bit more grip when cornering. I slapped some other rubber on my 9.9, something with a bit more grip. Save the XR0's for a fast, dry hard pack course. Internal cable routing - Man it looks cool. It protects the paint. Ever see cable housing eat its way through carbon? Not pretty. But man! It is a royal pain in my chamois to change the cables. Stuff I could do with out - Winter. I'd rather be out riding my 9.9

            Comments:

This bike is amazing. After getting the suspension fully dialed in, I felt like there wasn't a place all year that I didn't feel fully confident. On the climbs it ate up the small stuff to keep the best possible traction and was screaming fast on the descents. Adding a 120mm fork up front and thru axle gave the bike a very all mountain feel, but still only weighs in at 22lbs. I have found MY bike! No need to change perfection, I am forever sold on the Top Fuel 9.9SSL!

              Comments:

This was my second season on a Top Fuel 9.9 and I have to say that it just may be the ultimate XC race rig for Colorado. With some wheel and tire changes I could get it super light for shorter XC events or a little more rigid and solid for rougher courses. From short XC local races to 24 Hours of Moab it's hard not to fall in love with the handling and my old body (41 this year doh!)really appreciates the full suspension. I'm a big fan of bikes that I can race and ride hard the rest of the time and the Top Fuel has always worked well for me in that regard. Best of all the frame looks cool too.

I've been racing cross country at a very competitive level for over 10 years and the current top fuel is by far the best all around cross country bike I have ever ridden! The balanced handling of the bike is awesome and it's my first choice for short track, endurance, and even super d events. It's also great when out trail riding simply for fun.

                  Comments:

This bike is the perfect weapon for all types of XC and trail riding. Turn the platform off and you have a cushy ride that will keep you fresh all day. Turn it on an you are ready for a sprint. The only thing I would suggest changing is to a more robust and stiffer stem (I use a Rhythm) for better steering precision. I should mention the wheels too. I have a 3 year old pair of XXX lites that still look brand new. I have dinged them on rocks, roots, and even pinched flatted a tubeless tire through the tread with no rim damage. You can ride these carbon hoops with confidence that they won't crumple when the trail gets rough!
