2012 Trek Madone 3.1 Apex

For years now, Trek's Madones have set the standard for excellence, winning everything from local races to Grand Tours. The full-carbon 3.1 is made from 300-Series OCLV carbon with a Bontrager Race carbon fork. This frameset is light, stiff and comfortable because the folks at Trek are masters at the material, they do it right. The solid components are chosen for their combo of durability, reliability and straight-up value like the 10-speed SRAM Apex drivetrain with compact cranks and Bontrager controls and wheels. The geometry is smack-dab in the middle between upright and aggressive racer, it's neutral without feeling dull; fast, without being twitchy.

      Comments:

Rode my new Madone 500 miles last week and it held up great. Very firm but light. Takes the bumps out of the roads. I upgraded from a Trek 1.2 (08) and I am very pleased with the carbon frame and the Apex line. The shifters take a bit of getting used to but after that it is very easy and smooth shifting. Hills, headwinds, heat and humidity and it was still fun while on this bike.

        Comments:

For a 68-year old purchasing his first new bike in 20 years I couldn't have picked a better one. I looked at many bikes over two months and chose this one. Have surprised myself at what I can do with this bike at my age. I ride with people half my age and keep up with all of them.

        Comments:

This is just a great, solid bike. I went on a 124 km mountain trip the day after I picked up the bike from my dealer, retracing sections of the Tour of California 2012 Mt. Baldi stage 7. The SRAM Apex casette 11-32 gave me plenty of gears in reserve, even in the steepest sections. The stiffness of the frame is just superb. I added all kinds of accessories ( pedals, pump, cage, bottle, saddle pouch with spare tube, tools, Trip 5w computer ) to my 62cm bike, and still weight in at around 20 pounds. That is an incredible 4 pounds lighter than my Moser/Campagnolo CroMoly. Even though I would have preferred the SRAM Apex break calipers, the ones on the bike feel fantastic. I can t wait to try my new Madone 3.1 Apex in Yosemite this summer. This bike is ideal for mountain climbing. I haven't tried it on flat high speed terrain yet.

        Comments:

I recently upgraded to this bike from the FX which I still use for recreation and commuting. The Madone 3.1 Apex is so SMOOTH and FAST. I have already improved my average speed by almost 2 mph. It is nimble, light and responsive. The brakes provide excellent stopping power. I love the shifting of the SRAM Apex. It is simple and intuitive especially for a beginner like myself. Wish the wheels were a bit better quality but as this is entry level Carbon, that is a small thing. This bike is an excellent bargain and you get a ton of bike for the money.
