2012 Trek Fuel EX 8

Trek's Fuel EX 8 is primed for backcountry rides, hard-charging action and fun spins after work. This cool ride boasts Trek's Full Floater suspension technology with 120mm of ultra-smooth, tunable front and rear travel thanks to Fox. The rear shock was developed with Trek and has 2 chambers: a small one for bumps at low speed and a larger one for big hits, making your Fuel pedal incredibly well and giving you that bottomless feel at speed. The frame is built with Trek's Alpha aluminum for lightness, stiffness and excellent efficiency and sports Trek's ABP that keeps your rear end active when you're braking. Complementing the trick frameset are light, fast and tough Bontrager wheels, sure-stopping Shimano discs and a 10-speed Shimano SLX/XT drivetrain for crisp, quick shifts every time.

      Comments:

The main problems I've had with this bike is the hydraulic brakes get air in the lines and have to be bled at the shop for $20 and the rear derailleur needs periodic adjusting as it will skip gears when shifting from low to high. Other than that this is a well made rugged bike that has taken some serious abuse and keeps on keeping on. Despite earlier concerns I highly recommend this bike.

      Comments:

Been riding a fuel ex 8 since 2010. Love this bike. I use it for everything, for urban riding to free riding. The suspension is perfect, only complaint is the bontrager duster wheels and bontrager tires. I up graded to a custom built wheel set with maxxis minion tires. The elixir 5 brakes work perfectly with the bike. The rear derailed the shamono xt. Is cheap, would of proffered a slx rear to match the front.

      Comments:

I've mountain biked since 1992, after my first major foot surgery took me out of the running and marathoning crowd. I started with a used rigid frame Bridgestone, then went fully sus with my first aluminum frame, a Diamondback. Moved up to a Trek Fuel 70, then on to four more Treks, to arrive at my EX 8. I ride every non-rainy day, including right through the Maine winter, on snowmobile trails. I log about an hour a day, 290 days a year. Trails here are muddy year 'round, except when they are snow packed. That's hard conditions for chains, cassettes, bottom brackets, and such. Hard, too, on suspension components. The EX 8 is by far the best bike I've ever ridden; it handles gnarly single track in mud and snow, just like a nice pair of Atomic slalom skiis on steep ice. It's an extension of your body and mind, where you simply THINK what you want to do and where you want the bike to go, and ramp up the pedal power, and you just do it. Seamless, fearless, wonderful. If you ride hard, fast, technical, all conditions, and beat up on your gear, you'll love this bike.

      Comments:

I previously owned a Novara Method 2.0. It was heavy and slow compared to the Fuel. I was constantly fighting the derailleurs on the Method but have had the Fuel for 2 years & it's only been in the shop once (besides the 30 day check) for an adjustment. The Fuel is a fun quick all mountain bike that handles well.

I was riding a '98 Specialized FSR extreme, just got back into dirt after lotsa road time. On vacation in Oregon I rented an EX8, wow have bikes changed. I let my wife talk me into a new bike and man is this ever a dream bike. I'm not the best rider out there but this bike does all I ask and has made me a much better rider. I have a 5.2 Madone road bike so the whole fleet is Trek. This is my 4th Trek and I won't ever ride anything else. People say all the new stuff is pretty much the same, but that's not true, Trek is head and shoulders above in my opinion.

          Comments:

I haven't ridden a bike in about 10 years. I rode bmx bikes for about 11 years. I dirt jumped, raced bmx, and rode skate parks. My bike was an extension of me and I felt extremely comfortable on it. I got my license and didn't care to ride anymore. Now a few buddies got mountain bikes, so I gave it a shot. I purchased a hardtail. I really enjoyed it but soon found myself being a more downhill oriented rider. As we went out riding more, we found ourselves pushing harder trails, bigger drops, more rocks, more speed and sharper turns. My hardtail wasn't cutting it anymore. I shopped around for about 4 months before having my eyes on a fuel ex 7, or a stumpjumper fsr. After going to my local shop, I was quickly sold on the Fuel ex 8. Before I even left the shop I had installed quality peddles and wider bars with more height. I took it out that next day and proceeded to fly down trails faster and with more confidence than before, I was also climbing steeper, longer hills than before. Now it may have been the excitement of having my amazing bike that made the climbs easier, but this is 2 months in and I still climb faster and faster each day. I still feel the exact excitement every time I throw my leg over the bike as I did when I was a teen. I feel like I can do anything again, the bike is part of me again. As a matter of fact, I let all my buddies ride my bike, and they have all fallen in love with it. I have basically become a salesman at our local trails and sold 2 buddies on them.
