2011 Trek Rig (Gary Fisher Collection)

Trek designer Gary Fisher pretty much started our beloved sport on a singlespeed some 30 years ago. Trek's Rig is the natural extension of that bike. Trek delivers the ultimate singlespeed hardtail with a Platinum Series aluminum frame boasting G2 geometry and a custom Fox 100mm 29er fork. A fine selection of gear compliments the amazing frameset. For speed and flow, TruVativ cranks and sturdy Bontrager Race bars power robust Bonty wheels. And to slow the Rig down, Avid Juicy discs and Bontrager tires keep you in control. Who needs gears when you have big wheels? Gary didn't, and neither do you now.

      Comments:

I have been mountain biking 2 seasons. I bought a used Trek Cobia and bought this as a backup bike after seeing it on clearance. I hate hearing the chain bouncing off the chain stay on my Cobia. Oobvuously not an issue with the Rig. It is so quiet! The Fox fork is simply amazing compared to my Rock Shop Recon silver. I paid just over $1100 for the bike and the shock retails for close to $800! No brainer. I am now looking to upgrade my Cobia shock! I was a little worried about the dropouts after researching the bike, but the number of complaints seemed few considering the amount of sales s I took a chance. I went over the bike upon delivery and cranked down on the rear dropouts and immediately stripped the Allen heads on the cheap bolts. I replaced them. With stainless and so far no unwanted moment after 30 miles of riding some very challenging terrain, jumping log overs etc. Oddly my bontrager bars are not formed properly. A quick trip to the shop and they agreed and began the warranty process on them. The original tires quite honestly are a joke and were the first thing I upgraded. Aside from that this bike is quite capable right out of the box.

      Comments:

I liked the frame geo an fit, it was comfortable and fun to ride. Then after a few weeks the rear wheel kept moving. There are some many threads on MTBR about this problem so won't repeat, I'll just say that it was a total buzz kill made the bike useless. You think you are getting a deal until you notice that the wheels need frequent truing because they are soo poor, crankset wears out quickly, saddle is torture, the tires are an absolute joke...Well, you can count on the fox fork, right? Wrong!! Fork has a design flaw with the foam ring below the air piston, oil migrates into the air chamber--all of it! Another long thread on this on MTBR. This bike wins for most negative posts about frame and components on MTBR, I can't believe they still find suckers to buy this bike. I would not recommend this or Trek, or the LBS where I purchased this because they never heard or know of any problems--to anyone. It is experiences like this that drive customers to buy bikes online. easily the worst bike and worst buying and service experience in my 20 years riding mountain bikes.

Sometimes you just want a simple worry-free ride. The Rig does that and more. I might suggest the 29-2 tires for a bit more grip but otherwise I have a blast with my Rig.

          Comments:

Bought the 2012 model in February and have put almost 1000 mi on it. In one word "capable". This is a great bike for building muscle, increasing fitness, and improving climbing technical sections (no downshifting!). It's hard to believe that a bike this simple can be so much fun to ride. It is quiet, and requires little maintenance besides lubing the chain every few rides, and checking the chain tension. The brakes work fine for me, and the gearing is just right; I may change the rear cog to 20 just to be able to climb more of the steep hills around here. There have been comments regarding the chain tensioning, however, I have not experienced any of these problems. I am a lighter rider (5'8" 150lb), so maybe this has something to do with it? I would just recommend focus on spinning instead of pounding on the pedals. I have added carbon bars and seat post, and will be going tubeless soon. The bike weighs 25lb. I also have a Rumblefish, and this Rig is the real head turner because it's SS.

          Comments:

Bought my 2012 (black one) four months ago and have ridden it about twice a week on local rocky single track and some weekend outings. Mostly a great bike. Here is where I save you some trouble on the trail. The chain is junk and stretched every other ride until it got a weird twist in it that was not due to anything but a defect. Replace the chain and save yourself time. The rear wheel has broken six spokes on the drive side so far. They break at the nipples. I am taking it to my lbs to replace the rim with a non-as symmetric and butted spokes today. I am 190lbs and only the drive side spokes have broken. The headset was replaced by the lbs before I even got the bike - some defect they said. The cane creek they put on has been fine. Aside from those issues the bike has been great. Every bike has weaknesses, the above fairly minor ones are what I have found with this one so far.

          Comments:

I love this bike for training and rolling singletrack. The first thing I did was get rid of the handlebars and wheels. The tires are a little cheap and the rear hub continually loosened up on me. The brakes are okay. I love the Fox fork and the cranks. For this pricepoint, I expected a little more in the components. I just bought a competing company's bike, 29er,fully geared with XT gruppo for the same price, but with a Recon vs the Fox fork. I will eventually go to XT brakes.

I've had the bike since May 2011. I'm a XC rider/racer who wanted to give single speeding and 29ers a go without breaking the bank. The Rig handles very well. I was amazed at the trail debris and obstacles I was able to roll over. This bike gave me a lot of confidence to descend fast. The components are nothing fancy but they get the job done. In the end, single speeding is about pedaling hard and having fun. This bike delivers!

              Comments:

I give this Rig 4.5 stars merely because the brakes are horrible. I ride a RumbleFish II (geared) so going from that bike to the Rig is an easy transition. I love the geometry and how it allows the rider to focus on his/her core riding skills. This bike is super fast and when I fly pass other riders, I hear them say, "is that guy riding a SS?" Yes I am and it's a Rig. The gear ratio is right on and fits well with the trails I typically ride. I am using the stock tire (tubeless) with low pressure (20 psi) and they handle much better than a tube set-up. Now for the brakes...change them immediately. You need plan your stops ahead of time and they will make noise during hard braking. For the price, you cant go wrong and the ascetics of the bike are dialed in.
