Trek Bicycle Store: Top 15 Trek Dealer in the USA. Independently Owned, Passionately Operated by Midwest Cycling

OUR ROOTS  //  THE HISTORY OF Midwest Cycling

A tree doesn’t start with the branches, nor does a business start with immediate success. Both depend on a solid foundation and strong, deep roots.

Healthy trees have good roots, giving them nourishment and stability. Some trees have what is called a taproot, which is the most central and strongest of the roots, from which the other roots grow. Midwest Cycling has a taproot that comes in the form of a strong management team.

It is difficult to get a history of the cycling culture of the Midwest without hearing the names Kent McNeill Midwest Cycling. It’s downright impossible to learn about the racing culture and advocacy efforts of Omaha without seeing them pop up. It’s pretty safe to say that the cycling mecca that Omaha has become would not exist without the work of Kent and the Midwest Cycling team backing him.

There is truly an incredible heritage of advocacy under the surface here at Midwest Cycling. But you’d never hear that from Kent or his team, because they are the roots. Roots are underground, doing the dirty work that keeps everything healthy up above without being seen.

To learn more about the contributions the Midwest Cycling crew as well as the great cycling infrastructure that exists in and around Omaha, please visit our Advocacy page.

Kent’s first store, High Gear, opened in 2002 and quickly established itself as the destination for Omaha’s race clientele. Back then, Kent was already a highly visible character in the regional race scene. It was always easy to see him because he was always on top of the podium.

When he was ready to take on a new challenge in 2005, Kent saw Trek as the company most closely aligned with his ethos and opened the Trek Bicycle Store of Omaha in Midtown with the help of industry veteran Mark Savery.

Concurrently, an old friend, Jay Thomas, was on a parallel journey in expanding his initial store, Lincoln Bicycle Company, to a chain of three stores including Trek Bicycles Stores in Kansas City and St. Louis. In 2007, all of the stores were merged into what is now Midwest Cycling.

In 2009, Midwest Cycling procured Velogear, an established online cycling retail outfit with a national customer base. It was a prescient move at the time. It allowed Midwest Cycling to better serve its local customers with an “endless aisle” open 24 hours a day. The company learned how to weave its in-store and online customer service experiences in a great way.

The existing stores in the greater Kansas City and St. Louis markets were serving area cyclists very well, but Midwest Cycling saw an opportunity to reach more people in the area. So, in 2011, the Independence and Arnold stores were opened. At the same time, the original High Gear store was relocated to Papillion and renamed Trek Bicycle Store to match the rest of the locally owned stores' branding and to give customers a consistent experience.

Many other important partners have contributed greatly to the growth of Midwest Cycling. There have been a number of important associates over the course of time who have all contributed in one way or another.

Throughout all of this exciting growth and adaptation, it was Trek and its commitment to growing its partners by offering the best products and services to the cycling community that made Midwest Cycling a success. It’s our successful and healthy partnership with Trek that has allowed us to continue the advocacy and development efforts in our communities. A healthy business is a strong player in any community. We strive to employ good people and inevitably attract like-minded individuals who then get involved at various levels. It’s important for us to stay healthy as a viable and profitable business in order to invest back into good people, advocacy, and rider development.
